Pop-up cards look like magic, but they’re just clever cuts and folds. This is my go-to card when I’ve got a birthday tomorrow and nothing in the drawer!

What you'll need

  • Two sheets of A4 card in contrasting colours
  • Scraps of patterned paper for the cake layers
  • Craft knife and cutting mat, or sharp scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Free pop-up cake template (below)

Free printable template

Let's make it!

  1. Printed pop-up template folded in half

    Print and fold

Print the free template onto your inner card. Fold it in half along the middle line with the printed side on the outside.

  2. Scissors cutting pairs of slits into folded card

    Cut the tabs

Cut along the three pairs of solid lines through both layers. Don't cut the dotted lines. Those are for folding.

  3. Three stepped tabs popping up inside an open card

    Push the tabs through

Fold each tab back and forth along the dotted line to make a crisp crease. Open the card, then push each tab through to the inside so it stands up like a step.

  4. Patterned paper cake tiers glued onto the pop-up tabs

    Decorate the cake layers

Cut three rectangles of patterned paper, one for each tier. Add icing drips with a white pen, then glue each one onto the front of a tab.

  5. Paper candles on top of the pop-up cake

    Add candles and sparkle

Cut thin strips for candles with tiny yellow flames on top and glue them to the top tier. A few stars or sequins around the cake look lovely.

  6. The pop-up insert being glued inside a pink outer card

    Glue into the outer card

Fold your outer card in half. Glue the back of the pop-up insert inside it, keeping glue away from the tabs. Close it, press flat and leave to dry.

Kimberley's top tips

  • Check that the outer card is a tiny bit bigger than the insert so nothing pokes out.
  • Swap the cake for presents, balloons or a number for milestone birthdays.

Safety notes

  • If little ones are helping, grown-ups should do all the craft knife cutting.
